City of Annapolis Proclaims July 15th “Frederick Taylor Day”
(Annapolis, MD) – Huzzah! The Annapolis Towne Crier is often on hand for city citations but this time the City of Annapolis surprised Frederick Taylor, the Official Annapolis Towne Crier, with a citation in his honor. July 15th is now “Frederick Taylor Day” in Annapolis! The date was selected because it is Taylor’s birthday. Frederick Taylor Day recognizes the contributions Taylor has made as an ambassador to the city of Annapolis in his role as the Towne Crier, his portrayal of Francis Scott Key and as Squire Frederick, a tour guide for Annapolis Tours by Watermark. In an emotional speech, Annapolis Mayor Michael Pantelides bestowed Taylor with the honor at July 13th’s City Council Meeting at City Hall.
Frederick Taylor says of the surprise, "Everyday is a Gift; this is one I will never forget." Director of Land Operations for Watermark Heather Skipper says, “Frederick Taylor, known to us at Watermark as ‘Squire Frederick,’ is a wonderful asset to the City of Annapolis and our local community. His charm and warmth makes each visitor that meets him feel truly special. The passion he has for history comes through on every journey he provides to guests of Watermark. What he does involves a lot of hard work and dedication and, for him, a lot of fun! A day in his honor is well deserved.”
The Proclamation from the city announcing Frederick Taylor Day states, “Frederick has been ringing the bell for Proclamations at City and State events both here and abroad. The good Squire brings good cheer, smiles to faces and fun to thousands of visitors to our fine City of Annapolis. Squire Frederick is quick to add fun and flair to the most serious City meetings, lightening up the mood for all. Squire Frederick has been an outstanding member of the community and has liberally contributed his time and talents for the betterment of our citizens.”
Taylor became the Annapolis Towne Crier on December 31, 2008 appointed by Mayor Ellen Moyer. He has been leading walking tours of Annapolis for 18 years and during Maryland’s War of 1812 two-year Bicentennial Celebration, Taylor took on the role of Francis Scott Key. Taylor is a graduate of University of Maryland and a retired career NSA employee. A professional actor, Taylor can also sometimes be found performing at Annapolis’ Colonial Players Theater.
At Watermark, Fred is often requested by group leaders to lead their tours and he receives many positive reviews online and in print. A recent group said, “Squire Frederick was perfect for our group. He took us at our pace, was extremely informative, and had a marvelous sense of humor. One of our group members who is a professional tour guide stated that there is nothing that she appreciates more when traveling than a professional, articulate guide. Squire Frederick was tops. Everyone in the group thought he was great. Thank you so much for a wonderful tour.”
In his role as the Official Towne Crier of Annapolis, Taylor is requested to present proclamations at City and County events far and wide. He has introduced wedding parties, led tours on land, on the water and by motorcoach.
